Domain transfer FAQs

Everything you need to know about transferring your domain to one.com.

A domain transfer is the process of moving your domain name from one registrar to another. Registrars are companies like one.com that manage domain name registrations on your behalf. As the domain owner, you are always free to switch to a different provider.

Most domain transfers are completed within 5–7 days, though this can vary depending on your current registrar and the top-level domain (TLD) involved. Generic TLDs like .com and .net typically follow a standard process, while country-code TLDs may have their own rules and timescales.

one.com charges a competitive fee for domain transfers. You can also get a domain for free with hosting. Note that as part of the transfer, you will also need to pay a 12-month domain registration fee, which extends your registration period accordingly. For example, if you transfer a .net domain in June, your registration will be extended by 12 months from the current expiry date.

Before initiating a transfer, you will need: (1) an Auth-ID / EPP code from your current registrar, (2) access to the email address registered to the domain, as you will receive authorisation emails, and (3) to ensure your domain is unlocked and not in a transfer blackout period.

An Auth-ID (also called an EPP code or authorisation code) is a password-like string provided by your current registrar. It proves you are the authorised domain owner and is required to complete the transfer. You can usually request it through your current registrar's control panel or by contacting their support team.

If managed correctly, your website should experience little to no downtime. It is important to set up your hosting with one.com before the transfer completes and to update your DNS settings promptly. Our support team can guide you through this to ensure a seamless transition.

No, a domain transfer only moves the domain name itself. Your website files and emails are hosted separately and will need to be migrated independently. one.com provides a 1-click WordPress migration tool and easy email import tools within webmail to make this as straightforward as possible.

Yes. You can easily import your old emails into your new one.com mailbox using the webmail import feature. one.com supports automatic import from both hosted email accounts on other domains and free mailboxes such as Gmail and Hotmail. Please note that you cannot automatically move your inbox if you are transferring to and from the same domain.

Any SSL certificate from your previous provider will not carry over. However, as part of every hosting setup at one.com, we automatically install a completely free wildcard SSL certificate, so your website traffic will remain secure without any additional cost or effort on your part.

Some domains cannot be transferred if they: were registered or previously transferred within the last 60 days, are in a redemption or pending-delete status, are subject to a legal dispute, or have been locked by the registrar. Always check the status of your domain before initiating a transfer.

Many TLDs enforce restricted transfer periods, typically shortly after a domain is first registered or just before a renewal date. During these windows, outbound transfers may be blocked. Always verify your domain's transfer eligibility before starting the process to avoid unnecessary delays.
