What is an email domain?

An email domain is the part of an email address that comes after the @ symbol.

For example: in "hello@yourcompany.co.uk" the email domain is yourcompany.co.uk.

With free email tools, the provider owns this part of the address, which is why you get addresses ending in @gmail.com, @outlook.com or similar.

With a custom email domain, you choose the domain yourself, and create multiple email addresses on it. So you can have addresses like "name@yourcompany.com".

Choosing a good email domain

A good email domain is easy to recognise, remember and type. Usually it's your business name or related to that.

Shorter names are easier to remember and less likely to be mistyped. Try to avoid numbers, hyphens or extra words unless they genuinely help.

Choose a name that people can easily connect to you or your business.

.com and .co.uk are great choices, but there are many other domain extensions available. If your first choice is taken, a different ending may be a better option.

Choose an email plan, find an available domain and go to the control panel to create your email addresses. With one.com, you can set up your email domain in just a few steps.

You can't change an email domain in that sense. A domain name is not editable. But you can always register a new domain and migrate your emails to that.
