Bank of America buys domain names as preemptive strike

Written: Dec 27, 2010 Category: Domain
Bank of America has registered hundreds of domain names as a preemptive strike. Preempting any sort of leak of confidential information the company may suffer, Bank of America has registered hundreds of domain names for its senior level executives and board members.

Many of the domains registered by the banking giant include an executive or board member's name followed by either "suck" or "blows" and other derogatory comments. In some cases, the company has registered names for .com, .org and .net URLs.

Bank of America began gobbling domain names earlier this month to mitigate the effect any sort of data leak will have on the company.

"As a weird defence tactic, the bank has been registering rude domain names about its own top dogs", according to a recent Domains Directory report.

Some experts have criticized the move, because it opens the company to unnecessary ridicule and essentially gives cyber criminals a how-to guide to hacking its sites.

It is a common practice for critical websites to spring up as a means of ridiculing websites. Such website and domain names are popular among sports fans to second guess and question coaches, owners, broadcasters and team executives.
