Why do I get spam after registering a domain?

Did you notice an increase in emails about your domain? For example, mails offering services for SEO optimization or warning you about expiration? Then these emails are most likely spam, and we recommend moving them to your trash folder.

Note: Never click anything in a spam mail and don't reply. It only encourages the spammers to send more emails. Want to learn more? Read our tips on how to fight spam in your inbox.

How do spammers get my contact details?

When we register a domain name on behalf of our customers, we are obliged to add the registrant details to the WHOIS database. This is a requirement from ICANN, the organization who manages the internet.

The WHOIS database is a public directory where you can look up "who is" responsible for a domain or IP address. Unfortunately, this means it is also accessible to spammers who can mine it for data, even though this is forbidden. Spammers use this data to send targeted offers via email.

How do I stop these emails?

Once your address is listed by spammers, there is not much you can do. Move all spam you receive to the trash, and block the senders from delivering new emails.

To prevent your contact details from being listed in the future, we recommend activating Domain Privacy. It's most effective when you add it while ordering, because then your details will never be made public, but you can also activate it later from the control panel.
