What should the directories be used for?
The directories _private; images are directories which you can use for whatever you want.
The directories _vti_bin; _vti_cnf; _vti_log; _vti_pvt; _vti_txt; _vti_images all have MS FrontPage Server Extensions. If you do not use FrontPage, then you should disregard them (but don't delete them).
