SocialDeck acquisition will bring mobile, social gaming to Google's toolbox
Google recently announced it will purchase SocialDeck, a Canadian-based company that designs games for social networking sites and smartphone platforms.SocialDeck's technology allows users to play games against each other from remote locations. The technology has become popular since SocialDeck's introduction in 2008 as it allows gamers to collaborate even if one accesses games from a mobile app and another is logged onto Facebook from any device. After Google Canada announced the acquisition in a recent Twitter post, the acquisition is good news for SocialDeck's objectives.
"We started this company with the goal of connecting friends through social games on all kinds of exciting new mobile devices", SocialDeck wrote in a note on its Web site. "We've been amazed and humbled by all of the stories and experiences our customers (you!) have shared with us".
For Google, the acquisition signifies an increased presence in the smartphone web app and social media market. The company has hinted at partnerships with other social media gaming companies in an effort to rebound from its recent failure with the Google Wave social network, which may lose support from Google as early as the end of this year.
