New Zealand launches 'macronized' .nz domain names On Monday, the 26th of July, New Zealand launched .nz domain names with macrons. The event coincides with the start of the Maori Language Week.

This is a important event for natives, as it allows them to write in their indigenous language, Te Reo Maori, for the first time.

New Zealand Domain Name Commissioner Debbie Monahan is satisfied with the development. The introduction of macronized vowels makes the New Zealand internet more culturally representative, thanks to the successful completion of the global Internationalised Domain Name initiative. It is believed to be a step forward for online identity and the internet in New Zealand, according to Monahan.

Registration of .nz domain names with macrons will take place in the same way as usual - through a registrar. People who want to secure a certain name are encouraged to purchase it as soon as possible, as customers are served on a first-come, first-served basis.

The Maori Language Week is celebrated until August 1st. This year, the focus will be on language promotions; activities and initiatives will be implemented to encourage use of the language in communities.
