Facebook takes issue with Illinois startup Teachbook
Recently, it was announced that Facebook is taking legal action against Illinois startup website Teachbook. The social media giant is suing the latter site for infringment of name.Facebook claims the startup is taking advantage of "book" title it has made into a global brand.
"If others could freely use 'generic plus BOOK' marks for online networking services targeted to that particular generic category of individuals, the suffix BOOK could become a generic term for 'online community/networking services' or 'social networking services'", Facebook stated in its lawsuit, which was filed in San Jose district court. "That would dilute the distinctiveness of the Facebook Marks".
Teachbook, which some have referred to as the "Facebook for teachers", offers its users many similar services the social networking giant has. With many school systems banning faculty from accessing Facebook from their computers, Teachbook provided a valid alternative for those teachers looking to interact.
Facebook is seeking preliminary and injunctive relief that will keep Teachbook, as well as all other websites, from infringing on the trademark. The lawsuit also asks for Teachbook to pay Facebook any and all revenues and profits it had made.
Facebook recently passed the 500-million-user threshold, sealing its title as king of the social networking world.
