Clinics in Wales to go digital A forthcoming website will allow Welsh patients to view their medical records and book appointments online, Health Minister Edwina Hart announced today.

Hart stated that £1.7m in funding was to be made available for the website's development, which will be offered in both English and Welsh. The BBC reports that the Welsh secretary of the British Medical Association has expressed his support for the plan, saying that it would "go some way towards ensuring there is an improvement in IT systems in Wales".

News Wales writes that the Welsh authorities stated that their support for the plan was based in part on the ease of access to health resources that the website would offer elderly people and those living in rural areas, as those groups might have trouble making the trip to a distant GP's practice.

Healt care industry experts around the world have touted the benefits of increasing digitisation for the medical profession, saying that numerous aspects of healthcare are made both less efficient and more expensive due to their reliance on outdated technology.
