Mobile access to Google stymied in China
After Google announced that it was shutting down its China search website due to censorship concerns, the mobile service provided by the internet giant was recently obstructed by the Beijing government. The Los Angeles Times recently reported that Google says its mobile service in China has been partially blocked.
The partial block indicates a service disruption for any or all of the features that Google provides to users of its Android-powered smartphones. The article says that the "huge number" of mobile phone users in China make this a big threat to Google's position in China.
To add to that, one Chinese telecommunications company, Unicom, says that it would no longer allow Google's search website on its Android phones.
The state-controlled Xinhua news agency quoted an unnamed state official in China describing Google's attempt to bring uncensored search results to China as "totally wrong".
"Google has violated its written promise it made when entering the Chinese market by stopping filtering its searching service and blaming China in insinuation for alleged hacker attacks", the official told Xinhua.
However, a recent report says that other search engines are staying despite censorship concerns. One of Google's biggest competitors, Microsoft's Bing, told the Washington Post that it was continuing its work in China.
