U.N. launches FastStartFinance.org to track donations
The United Nations recently announced the development and launch of a website aimed at tracking the money donated by developed countries to help poorer nations negate the effects of global climate change. The website, FastStartFinance.org, will track ontributions until it reaches the $30 billion it hopes to deliver to developing countries impacted by climate change.The website will also monitor the distribution of the money to boost transparency, which the U.N. considers among the most important aspects of the project. Earlier this summer at the global climate change summit in Copenhagen, the funding for developing countries was one of the most important aspects of the eventual agreement.
"I have always called this short-term financing the golden key to Cancun," Christiana Figueres, head of the UN's climate change secretariat, said. "It is particularly urgent and important to have clarity about the source, the allocation and the disbursement of the short-term funds."
The web has become an increasingly common way for various governing bodies around the world to improve their transparency. The Obama administration has created a website to help Americans track dollars spent as part of the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act.
