Creation of internet domain names reaching milestone
Internet users have collectively reached a milestone. According to Verisign, a global web registration operator, more than 200 million domain names have been created since the internet's inception, Webuser.co.uk reports. The operator's report showed that 193 million domains were registered during the initial three months in 2010. Domains ending in .com were the most popular sites created among users during that period, accounting for almost half the total figure - 87 million. For domains with country codes, Germany, China and the UK had the most registered sites with .de, .cn and .uk extensions, respectively.
Domain growth has been exponential in recent years. In 2006, the amount of domain names reached its first significant milestone, surpassing 100 million sites.
While Verisign announced the milestone recently, web monitoring firm Pingdom believes it was reached well before Verisign went public with the information. According to Pingdom, it believes the number of domains passed 200 million right after the year's first quarter ended.
The amount of internet users in the UK is nearing its own milestone. According to information provided by the World Bank, the number of UK internet users is currently more than 46 million and should reach 50 million in the near future.
