What is DNS?
DNS is an abbreviation for Domain Name System. Essentially it is a protocol for forwarding your domain or parts of it, to somewhere else. For example, you can forward to another server, IP-address, another domain or mail server. You can administer the DNS settings in the Control Panel.
Forwarding a domain to another IP-address (A record)
An A record is used to forward a (sub)domain to an IP-address. In order to forward your domain hosted by One.com to an IP-address you have received, you need to make some changes in your web space Control Panel. Log on to your Control Panel at www.one.com and click DNS Advanced.
Check the box for Advanced web DNS settings
Click Update
Under Standard web DNS settings, disable the following two records:
yourdomain.com and www.yourdomain.com
yourdomain.com being your domain hosted by One.com.
These are the top and the bottom record in the list:
Click Approve to confirm.
Under Personal web DNS settings, create the two new records starting with www.yourdomain.com
In the left hand box, type www
In the dropdown menu in the middle, select A
In the right hand box, type in the IP you have received, for example 127.0.0.1
Click Add DNS setting
The first new record is now done.
For the second record, leave the left hand box blank.
In the middle dropdown menu, select A
In the right hand box, type in the IP you have received again, for example 127.0.0.1
Finally click Add DNS setting
You have now set up your domain to send its traffic on to your external web space. These changes will take at least 90 minutes to take effect.
Whenever you wish to use the default DNS settings for your domain hosted by One.com, just click Reset Web DNS. This will reset all settings to default.
Forwarding a domain using a CNAME
A CNAME is an IP-alias which is useful if you want to forward many names (for example subdomains) to the same IP-address. A CNAME ties a name to an A-record. Instead of making several A-records, you can create CNAMEs that are tied to one A-record. The advantage of a CNAME is that if you at some point would have to change the IP-address of your server, all you would have to do is change the IP-address of the A-record in order to change the IP for the CNAMEs as well.
In order to forward your domain hosted by One.com to a CNAME, you need to make some changes in your web space Control Panel. Log on to your Control Panel at www.one.com and click DNS Advanced.
Check the box for Advanced web DNS settings
Click Update
Under Standard web DNS settings, disable the following two records: yourdomain.com and www.yourdomain.com
yourdomain.com being your domain hosted by One.com.

Finally click Add DNS setting
A CNAME is used for www.yourdomain.com, and a web forward is used for yourdomain.com.
You have now set up your domain to send its traffic on to your external web space. These changes will take at least 90 minutes to take effect.
Whenever you wish to use the default DNS settings for your domain hosted by One.com, just click Reset Web DNS. This will reset all settings to default.
Forwarding a domain using a Web forward or a Web alias
A web forward is used to redirect visitors from one domain to another. For example, if you create a web forward from yourdomain.com to anotherdomain.com, everyone who enters yourdomain.com will be redirected to anotherdomain.com automatically.
A web alias does the same, except that the URL in the browser would still be yourdomain.com, however the displayed content would be that of anotherdomain.com.
In order to forward your domain hosted by One.com using a web forward or a web alias, you need to make some changes in your web space Control Panel. Log on to your Control Panel at www.one.com and click DNS Advanced.
Check the box for Advanced web DNS settings
Click Update

Changing MX Records (Mail DNS)
An MX record is a mail DNS tool. Changing MX records becomes relevant if you want to use your own mail server, like for example Microsoft Exchange Server. In this example we assume that you have your mail server on the IP-address 123.123.123.123.
In order to change MX records, you need to make some changes in your web space Control Panel. Log on to your Control Panel at www.one.com and click DNS Advanced.
Check the box for Advanced web DNS settings
Click Update
Under Advanced web DNS settings, create a new record called mail
In the left hand box, type mail
In the dropdown menu in the middle, select A
In the right hand box, type in the relevant IP, for example 123.123.123.123
Click Switch to Mail DNS settings.
Select and click Update.
Click Approve to continue setting up custom mail servers.
In the Server field, type in mail.yourdomain.com, mail being your newly created A record and yourdomain.com being your domain hosted by One.com.
In Value type 10.
Finally click Add DNS setting.
You have now set up your mail to use a custom mail server. These changes will take at least 90 minutes to take effect.
If you want to use one or more backup mail servers you can create additional MX records. They must be given different values, and the one with the lowest value will be requested first. If a server does not respond, the next higher number will be requested etc. By using the values 10, 20, 30 etc., it is easy to create more MX records without having to alter the existing MX records.
Whenever you wish to use One.com’s mail servers for your domain, just click Reset Mail DNS. This will reset all settings to default.
